Thoughts on Generation UCAN

Power On Coached Athlete Tom Lucas asked "Coach Jon-What are your thoughts on Generation UCAN products?"

Here is my response:

The basic idea behind Generation UCAN, at least for weight loss and endurance performance, is that it contains SuperStarch, a complex carbohydrate that breaks down slower than a simple sugar and does not create the sugar highs that a traditional performance drink might cause. Without going too far into the physiological complexities of blood sugar regulation (because it's really freaking complex), less sugar spikes will result in less insulin secretion. Insulin increases the body's ability to burn glycogen while hindering its ability to burn fat. Consequently, the ingestion of SuperStarch won't tip the fat-utilization to glycogen-utilization ratio towards glycogen-utilization in the way that ingesting a simple sugar does. Thus, you are burning the maximum amount of fat that your body can burn at a particular effort level and saving the precious- limited--glycogen stores while still gaining the benefits of sustained energy from the sports drink. (Please Note: This is a very very very simplified explanation.)

Add for Generation UCAN

This is a really good idea in theory and may very well work, but it's important to try Generation UCAN for yourself during training and see if it passes the practical test for you. If you like the taste of it, if you feel it can give you the energy you need for hours, then go for it. If it doesn't work, find something else that does.

Always remember, there is no magic bullet to loosing weight or improving performance. You certainly need to ingest nutrients in some form or another and you need products to do that. Maybe Generation UCAN is the product for you. At the end of the day, however, great performance is not built off of any one nutrition product, strength exercise, or workout theory, it is built off of un-sexy, some times mind-numbingly easy, sometimes overwhelmingly hard, consistent, training. If you want want to increase your ability to burn fat at a higher effort level, get to work!
